Introduction to Geometry

Hello to all of you! Today I am going to give you an introduction to geometry and some basic concepts about it. 

Definition: 

Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with shapes and figures. Geometry explains how to build or draw shapes, measure them, and compare them. People use geometry in many kinds of work, from building houses and bridges to planning space travel. (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2024)









BASIC CONCEPTS OF GEOMETRY: (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2024)


Points, Lines and Angles


  • Points: Represented by a dot. It doesn't have any length or width. It's just a location in space, like a pinpoint in a map.








  • Lines: Line is an object that extends without end in both directions. A line segment is a part of a line with two end points. It is usually drawn with arrowheads to show that it goes on forever. A line segment is a part of a line with two end points.

  • Angles: Angles are measured in degrees. A right angle measures 90 degrees. Angles that are smaller than a right angle are called acute. Angles that are larger than a right angle but smaller than a straight angle are called obtuse.







POLYGONS AND CIRCLES


  • Polygons: A polygon is a closed figure formed by joining together line segments. A polygon with three sides is a triangle. If all three sides of a triangle are equal, it is an equilateral triangle. A triangle with one right angle is a right triangle.

  • Circles: It have curves. All the points on the edge of a circle are the same distance from the center. This distance is called the radius. The diameter is the distance across a circle through the center.
